Ken Werner photographed Halloween night on San Francisco's Polk and Castro Streets for five years from 1976 – costumes, masks, drag, leather and street theatre at the height of the city's gay liberation era. He cut the pictures together into what he called a 'paper movie' in three acts, from the night's start through to the dawn aftermath, and self-published it in 1981 in an edition of 1,500, just before the AIDS crisis changed the city.
